Disorders of the Sense of Smell

In this blog post, we’ll explore the various disorders affecting the sense of smell. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have experienced a loss of this sense. Some have regained it, while others have not. Other disorders can be associated with the sense of smell; these may be permanent or temporary.

Hyposmia and anosmia

First, there is hyposmia. This condition refers to a diminished sense of smell. There are many tests conducted by professionals to help diagnose this condition.

Next, anosmia is more disruptive in daily life, as it involves a complete loss of the sense of smell. This condition can be dangerous because odors such as gas or smoke, for example, can no longer be detected.

Parosmia and cacosmia

Now let’s talk about parosmia, a condition in which you perceive a smell that does not correspond to the actual stimulus. In other words, you smell something that isn’t really there. Generally, this smell is unpleasant.

Cacosmia is similar to parosmia. This condition refers to the persistent perception of a foul odor.
