The olfactory facets of a perfume

the 7 olfactory families

THE ALDEHYDE NOTE

Aldehydes are synthetic molecules found naturally in citrus peels. In a perfume, the aldehyde note gives the fragrance a metallic character, with a slightly oily aroma, sometimes almost soapy, and more or less reminiscent of orange. They bring a sense of freshness, lightness, and power to the perfume.

Amber Note

These are accords that associate so-called «balsamic» notes. The fragrance that best embodies this note is the famous Shalimar by Guerlain. Amber notes provide a true «second skin effect,» making the fragrance more sensual and addictive.

The facet of leather

The first leather perfumes were created by the master glove makers of Grasse, who would macerate their leather scraps. This unique characteristic gives the perfume an animalistic and sensual character, with notes that are sweet, warm, almost feline, and particularly opulent. Certain leather perfumes can evoke an invisible fur, or simply reference the equestrian tack of the nobility of the time. They are often perfumes with a rather powerful character, ideal for lovers of bold and tenacious scents.

The spicy side

This facet relies on spice blends and playful notes with an intense and unique character. These scents, both tart and sweet, are perfect for those who seek originality. The spicy facet is clearly recognizable in certain perfumes, such as *La Fin du Monde*, created by État Libre d’Orange.

The Fruity Side

It is composed of various fruity aromas, with a natural and sweet touch. Fruity notes blend wonderfully in perfumery and bring a touch of modernity, lightness, and radiance to a fragrance. Often found in women's eaux de parfum, the trend is leaning towards red berries, melon, peach, and, of course, apple, which remains very popular. The fruity facet allows for the creation of fragrances that are both gourmand and innocent. Increasingly common on the market, they pose a real challenge to floral perfumes.

The gourmet side

The pioneer of this new fragrance family is «Angel» by Thierry Mugler. The idea is to create a fragrance whose notes evoke something edible, something that tickles the taste buds, something gourmand. Having become a true trend, we are seeing more and more gourmand fragrances appear on the market, particularly those with caramel as their base note. Gourmand fragrances create the effect of delicious, edible skin, thanks to an overdose of ethyl maltol, which produces a sweet, caramelized, almost «cotton candy» effect. An example is «La Petite Robe Noire» by Guerlain, based on a «macaron» accord and its derivatives, for an ever more gourmand sillage.

THE MUSKY FACET

A natural note renowned for its aphrodisiac properties, musk is an intense and animalistic scent. Its effect is pure, captivating, and particularly distinctive, allowing one to ’mysteriously attract the opposite sex.« Its trail is pronounced, intense, velvety, and sensual. Calvin Klein uses it in his androgynous fragrances, CK One.

THE POWDERY ASPECT

This powdery aspect immediately evokes iris. A noble and elegant flower, it lends the fragrance a soft and slightly cottony sensation, reminiscent of traditional rice powders used in beauty rituals. Violet also adds a powdery touch to the fragrance.

The Ecological Dimension

This facet directly evokes leaves and roots, as well as lush vegetation. Inspired by botanical and natural elements, it lends the fragrance a touch of freshness and lightness. Very trendy, green fragrances are young, natural, and often unisex. This facet incorporates notes of green, unripe fruits. One of its key ingredients is galbanum, which offers an occassionally slightly earthy and resinous sensation, blending wonderfully with floral or chypre notes.

THE MARINE FACET

These are bright, aquatic, iodized, or ozonic notes that evoke the sea or attempt to reproduce that elusive «water scent.» Fragrances with marine accents are perfect for summer or warm climates and are particularly neutral. Examples include Acqua di Rem or the very first of its kind: Eau d’Issey by Issey Miyake.
